Hiking in Riverside State Park

Saturday, my oldest daughter had the day off from her job as a hospital RN, so I thought, "Hey, how about we go to Riverside State Park and do some hiking" The next thing you know the family was on their way to the park for a picnic and day hike.

My wife and mother stayed at the picnic spot to catch up on their summer reading and play with Jules the Cocker Spaniel. While my daughter and I set off to explore the many trails that make up Riverside State Park, north of Spokane,Washington.

In preparation for Priest Lake 50k in the fall, I was planning on 12 miles or 3 hours, which ever comes first. Well as anyone who hikes or runs on trails knows, the miles come a little slower out in the woods. We ended up hiking over to a horse corral, and to our surprise there was a new colt with it's mother. What a treat to see this young horse.

The horse corral was a good turn around point for an out and back. It worked out just right as we made it back to the picnic area in 3 hours, for a total of 9 miles.

I really enjoyed the time spent on the trails with my daughter. It's a special time, where it's just the two of us, hiking, talking, and enjoying the great outdoors. She's the same daughter who ran the Spokane River Run 5k this year, and I think it's great that she shares the same love of the outdoors that I do.

Well......That's it for now, I hope everyone is enjoying their summer, I know I am!!

Until next time...Mike.

  3. Time spent with family like that is just priceless! How cool you got to see a new colt, too. I remember running in Yellowstone in ... um... the mid 80s (gasp) and seeing a new colt being born. Crazy that I still remember that! So glad you got to see that with your daughter!
